Step 3

  • Reflect on the following

A.  How confident are you in the predicted outcome of the written analysis?  20%, 40%, 60%, 80% or 100%

       100%

B.  How confident are you in the predicted outcome of the eartraining?  20%, 40%, 60%, 80% or 100%

      80%

C.  On a scale from 1-10, about how much effort/time did you put into preparing for this exam?

      8

D.  What part(s) did you find most challenging?  Easiest?

I would say the hardest parts were the older material we had to review such as natural minor, melodic, and harmonic minor scales. The other thing that was hard was some of the intervals such as major 7ths and P5ths and just distinguishing between them. Though I think the easiest parts was the stuff I had already known from playing in band such as major scales and clefs. Being able to apply most concepts to music theory and vise versa was extremely helpful in my learn.

Midterm Reflection

Step 1

  • Review the Benchmark Goals you set for yourself in Unit 1, what is it that you hope to know and/or be able to do at the conclusion of the course?

A.  Comment on your achievements thus far

So far I had wanted to achieve being able to apply theory to guitar and bass and somewhat learning piano. So far, modes, minor scales, and intervals have hugely benefited my musical experience and makes it easier to improvise/ read music. With piano, just noodling around in scales has motivated me to start lessons because I have found it so much fun and easy to play.  B.  Are you making good progress toward your goal?

I would say I'm making great progress to my goal. I already see large improvements in my band recordings and practicing. I have also been able to apply concepts to the piano enabling me to easily learn and noodle on it.

C.  Have you been able to stretch yourself to learn more or do you find that you rely only on what you already knew prior to the course?

I have found throughout the course that I have had to take concepts from the course and apply them to current lessons. Though, with a musical background, Its has been extremely more easier to apply concepts. Overall I would say its 50/50 on what I have stretched to lean and what I had previously known.

D.  What has been the greatest benefit/most rewarding aspect of your learning experience this semester?

I would say the most rewarding aspect of my leaning experience this semester was being able to find out my strengths and weaknesses in terms of self guided learning. I've found out I get distracted easily and occasionally need to pull my self back into my work. Ive also found out I need to plan out what is due for the week and make sure its organised and complete.

E.  What might interfere with your progress and how can you prevent this interference?

I think just getting distracted talking to people would interfere with my work. What I need to do is pull my self back into my work and make sure I'm making the due dates possible.

  • Review your Music Literacy Benchmark Assessment located in Unit 1

A.  Comment on your achievements thus far (1,3,5) relating to your literacy confidence for each concept

      1=Beginner, 3=Intermediate and 5=Advanced

A.  Pitch= 5 (still stands)

B.  Rhythm=  3 (My rhythm has improved extremely since the start of the course)

C.  Meter=3 (meter has also improved)

D.  Signs, Symbols & Terms=3 (Accidentals and phrasing is now more clear)

E.  Scales= 3 (Still having a bit of trouble on the scales, especially minor scales and higher register scales.)

F.  Key Signatures= 3 (Hard to memorize all key sigs. but I'm getting there)

G.  Chords=3 (Some chords still a little unclear. Most of knowledge still comes from guitar)

H.  Intervals=  1 (Almost proficient in intervals)

I.  Ear Training= 5 (Still very good in ear training. Have applied more concepts.)

J. Dictation=5 (Still stands)

K.  Sight Reading=5 (still stands)

B.  Are you making good progress toward your goal?

I would say Im making adequate progress towards my goal. More concepts though could be applied

C.  Describe the resources/tools that are most helpful to your understanding of this subject

Tools and resources that are most helpful are my peers. Just them explaining is an extreme amount of help.

D.  What might interfere with your progress and how can you prevent this interference?

I would say the only thing that would interfere with my progress is not understanding some of the concepts presented. I could prevent this by going to either Julie or Neil for further understanding.

  • Review your Unit 1 Self Regulation Inventory & Work Habits

A.  Comment on the outcome of these self assessments as it relates to the quality of your work flow thus far

I would say myself that my quality of work flow so far is pretty poor considering the amount of times I've been able to hand in something on time. This is usually due to the about of work and how hard the work is. My self assessments have said that I'm able to hand these in on time and be able to monitor my work flow but completely and honestly I have not lived up to those expectations. This will not happen during the second part of the semester.

B.   What has been your greatest strength?

My greatest strength have been able to understand most concepts after going in for help or being able to get help from peers and outside sources.

C.   How can you compensate for weaknesses?

I could increase my workflow to compensate for my weakness. By doing so will help me further understand the concepts.

D.   In what ways might you modify your approach to the class during the second part of the semester?

I can set due dates to increase my work flow and productivity. By doing so, assignments will no longer be late again.

  • Briefly review the assignments you have submitted for Units 1-6

A.  Comment on the quality of work reflected in your ePortfolio relating to areas of strengths as well as areas of needed improvement

I feel like my work is fairly proficient in terms of completeness and proficiency. Though my layout of jimdo is rather confusing and could be improved.

B.  Will you continue to sculpt the work reflected in your ePortfolio as you did for the first half of the course or do you plan on making changes for the second part of the semester?

I plan on making sure my portfolio is more organized and has more distinct sections.

Suggestions

  • Alfred: Love Alfred and the material it presents. UI could be a bit better.
  • Work Flow: the work flow is adequate. Mainly my fault for not being able to turn them in on time.
